Bootleg Sessions v.4 - The Last 'Leg

A working title.

SF to Seattle

I'm going to tell you right now that the clip starting at 1:34 is one of the best things I've ever seen in any vid. And I'm not talking just fixed vids either. That's one of those things that you just can't plan for... the pedestrian walking up to the light, staring at Massan for a second, and then the way he looks at Emi after he blasts by... pure, unadulterated genius. It reminded me of when that drunk guy leveled Tony in BSv.1... random hilarity/brilliance captured pretty much by accident.

It's always good to see Tyler in the mix as well...

New Very Masa 5 panel caps

Just got a couple of the new 5 panel lids from Very Masa. These are so incredibly nice, and they're larger than most 5 panels so they actually fit your head (or my head anyway) like a normal cap. If you want one, you'll need to hit up Masa ASAP because I promise you they won't last long...!

Bring back RAD!

The movie RAD is one of the greatest films of all time, right up there with Breakin', Thrashin', Quicksilver, and Gleaming the Cube, and yet it has never been released on DVD. A friend sent me a link to this website where they are petitioning MGM studios to do just that. If you remember this flick, or even if you don't, check out this page and sign the petition.

By the way, someone needs to set up a Breakin'/Thrashin'/Quicksilver'/RAD/Gleaming the Cube movie marathon event. Can the human brain withstand that much horrible dialogue in a single sitting? Let's find out!

Pedal to Podium

Memorial Bike Ride To Raise Funds For Alzheimer’s Association

Held in memory of Podium’s founding father, Winston Dunlap, Podium Distribution’s first annual Winston Ride will be held on Sunday, November 15th in Los Angeles’ South Bay. The event will consist of a series of three rides—a six, a fourteen, and a thirty five mile option to fit all rider levels. All proceeds generated form the ride will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Winston Dunlap lost his battle with Alzheimer’s last year, which prompted his son Brian Dunlap to create an event designed to build awareness around the debilitating and still incurable disease.

“We spent a huge part of our childhood racing and riding BMX which my dad was a huge supporter of,” says Podium VP Brian Dunlap. “I felt like creating a fun event that everyone can participate in would be a great way to honor my father’s life and help raise some funds for Alzheimer’s research.”

The Winston Ride will take place at Sangria on Hermosa Beach Pier at 9am on Sunday, November 15th.

Ride the Republic

Here's the lowdown from Peru Dobson...

Rock the Republic is a 3-day (Oct.15-17) music and art festival in downtown Bryan, which is adjacent to us in College Station. They are calling it a "Spectacle of Sight and Sound". There are tons of different live bands playing, all of them being from Texas. There is also a stomp competition, a benefit walk, and slam poetry.

The cycling events are the main events for Saturday the 17th. There is an alley-cat race starting around 2 pm, followed by live music during the bmx and fixed freestyle comps. The map for the race will be posted sometime this coming week on Third Coast Fixed. The local 20" guys are building I think 3 quarter pipes, a wedge, a grind box, and they will be bringing their huge lake jump ramp also.

The Fixed freestyle comp prize is the one of a kind Volume Cutter. There is also multiple bags, gift certificates, clothing, other components, and a Fuji Track frame for the race and BMX comp. Most of the clothing and two of the bags are being made here in Texas by small independent companies. i.e.: DUAL, EYESORE, Black Gold Cycling, Double A Caps, Subzersive Cycling, The Byke Project.

Hemingway gets his velo on

I'm reading Ernest Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" right now. It's about the years that he spent living and writing in Paris during the 1920s. Just read a section about his love for bike racing, and it was so interesting that I'm actually going to sit here and transcribe part of it for you...

I have started many stories about bicycle racing but have never written one that is as good as the races are both on the indoor and outdoor tracks and on the roads. But I will get the Velodrome d'Hiver with the smoky light of the afternoon and the high-banked wooden track and the whirring sound the tires made on the wood as the riders passed, the effort and the tactics as the riders climbed and plunged, each one a part of his machine; I will get the magic of the demi-fond, the noise of the motors with their rollers set out behind them that the entraineurs rode, wearing their heavy crash helmets and leaning backward in their ponderous leather suits, to shelter the riders who followed them from the air resistance, the riders in their lighter crash helmets bent low over their handlebars their legs turning the huge gear sprockets and the small front wheels touching the roller behind the machine that gave them shelter to ride in, and the duels that were more exciting than anything, the put-puting of the motorcycles and the riders elbow to elbow and wheel to wheel up and down and around at deadly speed until one man could not hold the pace and broke away and the solid wall of air that he had been sheltered against hit him.

There were so many kinds of racing. The straight sprints raced in heats or in match races where the two riders would balance for long seconds on their machines for the advantage of making the other rider take the lead and then the slow circling and the final plunge into the driving purity of speed...

There's another part where he describes a famous rider nicknamed "The Sioux" who would "suck up cherry brandy from a rubber tube that connected with a hot water bottle under his shirt when he needed it near the end as he increased his savage speed..."

I guess they weren't too worried about riders using performance enhancing substances back in those days.

Very good book.

Ten more days...

Brilliant. Can't wait. And here's a very interesting (and extremely long) article about Spike Jonze. The stuff about him working at Freestylin' in the '80s brings back so many memories for me... I worshipped that magazine when I was a kid and Spike, Lewman, and Jenkins were my heroes. Their attitude toward life that filtered through the pages of Freestylin' is without question one of the reasons why the Bootleg Sessions project exists. It's all about having fun doing things that other people wouldn't do in ways that no one else would do them...

Interview with Tom LaMarche

The enigma that is Tom LaMarche finally speaks with Torey at WRAHW... here.

Los Idiot Kat

I received a notice about this event from Julie, so I'm assuming it's happening somewhere in NYC...

Bootleg Sessions v.3 screening in Reno

We're always down to help out with a good cause. This looks like it will be fun. Fun is always a good cause.
