Subrosa Fixed Gear

Looks like some more BMX companies are jumping into the fixed gear game. I'm surprised we haven't heard more about this, but apparently Subrosa was showing a prototype at their booth at Interbike.

From 407 Fixed Gear

Parts is parts

The Fixed Gear thing has supposedly been dying for about a decade now, but for some reason people are still riding them and companies are still coming out with new-fangled ideas for parts. Spotted these awhile ago on HKFixed...

...and this yesterday at 3Bancho...

And let's not forget the handled seat I referenced a few days ago...

The bars vaguely remind me of the old Graveyard flatland bars from the mid-90s...

...and the concept behind the forks is somewhat similar to what WeThePeople did with their adjustable offset flatland forks a few years ago (second fork from the right)...

I personally would be interested in trying out the Starfuckers forks, just to see what they feel like in the zero offset position. I think those could definitely help a lot of guys out, and it would be nice to be able to switch to the more stable offset position for the ride home.

Keep the ideas coming, people. Some of them are good, some of them aren't quite so good, but they're all necessary in their own way...

Mishka mail

Got an amazing package from Mishka today...!

You know, I have a much, much greater appreciation for the themes behind what these guys put together after meeting them in person and seeing the space they work in. You really get the feeling from them that they just sell the clothes as a means to fuel their various artistic and creative obsessions, and I can't help but respect that.

A couple of months ago I met this guy who owns a shop in Louisville called Ultra-Pop. He was this normal looking joe, but he was completely decked out in Mishka gear. I struck up a conversation with him, and he went off for literally a half an hour about why he loved Mishka's absurdist pop-art tendencies so much. It was really pretty fascinating to listen to him talk about it in such incredible detail. I need to get down to L'ville and hit up his shop sometime soon...

We are living in exponential times

Pharrell's BMW

No, it's not an M3, it's a Brooklyn Machine Works Gangsta Track.

I gotta admit, it's rather nice to see a mega-celebrity like this showing off a fixed gear bike rather than some diamond-encrusted SUV with gold rims and hydraulics or whatever...

Spotted at hypebeast.com.

Prolly is even more Not Probably

Prolly's ever popular posts about bikes, buildings, and blog spins have moved to a new home...

http://www.prollyisnotprobably.com/

I just googled "John Prolly," and this is the first image that came up...

And no, the red eyes are not from the camera flash. That's really what he looks like.

Villains & Co. November

From Jay @ Villains & Co...

"It’s November and it’s time to bundle up. This month we have a pullover hood for those colder nights. We also have the second color way in the Villains tall boy. A new version of the big blade tee, and a tee that just tells it like it is. This month we have also made a few XXL’s for those bigger bro’s that have been asking. Sit tight till Saturday and the new stuff will be up, but don’t forget if you live in Toronto head down to Livestock. if that doesn’t work for you hit up Loop in Waterloo for your Villains needs. First five orders* will get a free bonus."

Seats and more

Spotted this @ 3BANCHO...

I'm not sure if this seat is designed specifically for fixed tricks or whatever, perhaps the handle has some other purpose that I'm not aware of, but it immediately reminded me of a lot of gimmick seats that came out for BMX in the '80s...

To be honest, the seat handle seems like a good idea at first, but it didn't take guys long to figure out that it was hard to hold onto because there's not really much material to wrap your hand around, and what's worse is the fact that it can sometimes be tough to get your fingers out of that slot if things suddenly go horribly wrong. That's why grip seats that come out now just have a really thick plastic roll in the back.

I also saw this @ 3BANCHO which I thought was pretty funny/weird...

The McCainbike!

In response to Trackstar's Obamabike that was recently modeled by our man Wilis, the RNC has just released this photo of Sarah Palin straddling the McCainbike. Note the WMD reference...

Estate L.A.

Here's more about the hat that Estate L.A. did for Freeman Transport. Looks like it was the first of a series of new '1930s retro fitteds that they'll be putting out in the near future...

OK, I'm done now, I promise.

More shoe design time-wastage

I screwed around with this way too much today...

Freeman Transport... again.

Got a really nice package from the guys at Freeman Transport yesterday, and I mean really nice. I almost can't believe how much thought and attention to detail these guys have put into their brand. Benny Gold wrought logos, Merino wool socks, and the Freeman ball cap... don't get me started on the cap.

OK, sorry, but I'm gonna go off on the cap a little bit. This thing is super nice, almost over-the-top nice, like class-out-the-ass nice. Hand made by Estate L.A., it has a wool exterior, clean, subtle detailing...

...and the interior fabrics are... well... I don't know what they are. But it's like a bed for your head. And yes, it's fitted.

If the rigs these guys are putting together are even half as sharp as the threads they're producing... 'nuff said.

Someday I'm going up to MNPLS...

Bigger is Better?

Sunday Bikes has this new project they're working on, the 24" Model-C...

Kinda funny how we're all supposed to be riding BMX bikes, while all the BMX companies seem to be building FGs and Cruisers, i.e. bikes you can actually ride.

Maybe Sunday should have taken it a step farther and built something like this rig that Orson Olmstead put together (thanks for the pic, Orson)...

For me personally, it's not what the bike looks like, it's the fixed gear thing that I'm fascinated by/in love with/addicted to. To be honest, the first time I became interested in riding fixed was when I saw flatlander Trevor Meyer break out an FG at some comp (I think it was the X-Games) in 2001...

In other words, it's not the size that matters, it's how you use it!

Edit: Here's a great example of the new style of fixed rigs that I'm guessing will soon start popping up everywhere... the Fixedgearlondon x Vans collab frame...

Holy crap that's nice.

What it's all about

I rode this spot (the tennis court @ about 2 minutes in) when I was in Seattle with a bunch of people just hanging out. This vid brings back great memories. Zach Hoffner, Justin Av, Tyler Johnson, Jake Ricker, and Chris Clappe absolutely killing it. I gotta get out to Seattle again...

Let's talk about FUMIKIRI

One of the shorts that was included in many of the Bicycle Film Festivals this year was a production by the JAN crew called Fumikiri. In case you haven't seen it already, here is a trailer that they put out for the short BFF edit in June...

trailer for FUMIKIRI from JAN on Vimeo.

Recently I was fortunate enough to see the full version of Fumikiri that premiered at the BFF stop in Tokyo (I didn't see it in Tokyo, the JAN crew sent it to me), and it kills. The final edit has evolved tremendously from when the above trailer was done, there are several new riders and lots of new footage, and the way the whole thing is filmed and put together is really top notch. Very smooth and beautiful. Most importantly, you get a great feel for how guys ride in Japan and how much fun they have, and the personality of everyone involved really comes out.

The best part about all of this is the fact that hopefully we (meaning Ride/Relax Productions) are going to be able to distribute the Fumikiri DVD here in the U.S. for a reasonable price. Importing anything from Japan is a bitch right now because of the ridiculously weak $, but we're talking about having us actually press the copies we're going to distro ourselves here in the states which would save a lot of cake.

So, in short, the full blown Fumikiri will hopefully be coming sometime this winter, so stay tuned. We'll probably have a limited run of this, and you definitely don't want to miss out...!

Barspin bunnyhops galore, plus more from Tyler J.

SuperTed opened the floodgates on the barspin bunnyhop thing, and now everyone's getting them dialed, including Kyoichi and Mosher...

Lowdown Magazine

Got the latest issue of Lowdown Magazine at the bookstore today. Good rag, usually has some solid skate/art/street stuff in it, including the occasional decent (if not a bit cliched) fixed gear article. Only problem is, it's printed in England, and with the weak-ass dollar right now it cost me $16. Pretty stiff. I still bought it though, because I'm addicted to print magazines for some reason.

Vans x Fixedgearlondon

From Andy @ fixedgearlondon...

"Fixedgearlondon was founded by Andy and Ted in 2005, riding fixed has since become our lives – and more. This frame is the first that Ted has built from scratch and is Fixedgearlondons' interpretation of what a Vans fixed gear bike should be like."

More pics can be seen here, but none that show the what the complete bike actually looks like. Come on guys, give us the full view! We want to see this thing!

FBM prototypes

Looks like FBM is working on updating the Sword. Here are some pics I spotted on their website recently...

Check out that integrated seat clamp...

Vastly improved drop-outs (and the Profile hub is lovely too, ha ha).

But the most interesting thing has to be this new fork they're working on...

R.E.Load gettin' it done!

I got to take a peek inside R.E.Load when I was in Seattle, it's a pretty amazing place. Check out this time-lapse vid of how their bags are put together...

Handmade from scratch. Gotta love that.

More Cog & Chain Vans

I originally saw the new Chain & Cog skids from Vans on Prolly's blog, and now there are three new colorways that will be available at DQM...

I'd have to steer clear of the reds with the chain print, not really big on shoes with graphics on them, but I do like the whites with the black soles.

Freeman Transport is up and running

I was just checking out the recently completed Freeman Transport website, and I gotta say, I want one of these bikes for when I go visit the family in Boston. Flying with a bike is such a royal pain in the ass, and an FT rig would make it a hell of a lot easier. Guess I'd better start saving some coin...

Built up JAN frame

Here is one of the new JAN frames fully built up...

Super clean.

I can't even explain how amazing this is.

I generally try to not post things that have most likely been dropped on a million different blogs/forums/etc already, but there are certain things that everyone needs to see...

The "fighting" is epic, but it's the blatant overuse of the burnout sound effect that makes this one of the greatest film clips of all time.

Decisions decisions...

So should I go with Obama's "Dude, Where's The Hope?" shirt or McCain's "Palin Power" shirt (note the lipstick "i")? Golly, being a responsible, well-informed participant in the democratic process sure is difficult...!

Personally, I think the Libertarians have the best slogan for this election...

Watch your butts in San Marcos, Texas!

The local police are onto you fixed gear hooligans! And what's even worse, so is the local media!

San Marcos was, of course, featured in Bootlegs v.2. Let's all keep Justin and Ben in our thoughts and hope that they don't get busted by the police and/or interviewed by the Bobcat Update.

Gretchen from Montreal

Holding it down up north with some serious trackstandage. The first pic is insane, gotta see some video of that. Digging the BMW too.

Wear/Ride 'em.

Thought this was a pretty cool advert...

Wear 'em. Same goes for bikes as well. Ride 'em.

Tithead

Here's a short video my buddy Steve put together of himself riding. The last clip his wheel taco's. Funny shit.

Macaframa heads

Gotta be cool for Colby and Colin to see Macaframa up in lights...

...and look at this line! Is that for real? Amazing!

Very happy for those guys. Don't miss their interview in the next ish of Fixed Magazine...!

More photos of the premiere here, source was Tracko.

Villains package

Got a really nice package from Villains & Co. today...

Great stuff. These guys are still very small, but I hope they get bigger (but not TOO big) because I really dig what they do. I especially liked the packaging for the stocking cap...

"Keeps you cool on cold days"... classic.
